10 Signs That Say You Need New Furniture

In need of a new sofa? Or does your seating situation need some minor repairs? Read on to find out if you’ll be saving or spending money.

With the possibility of buying furniture new and old through online channels, Singaporeans aren’t starved for choice when selecting the next living room centrepiece. The choice you need too make is this: Do I really need a new sofa, an upgrade for the wardrobe, a bigger shoe rack…

You go back and forth. Palms are sweaty, one eye on the flashy deal and the other on that ratty old sofa.

Is this really the time to change your furniture? Here’s a list of questions you need to ask yourself.

1. Are there signs of wear?

If it’s made from leather, the seat cushions will look discoloured. The seat area is prominently lighter than the rest of the sofa or chair. And if it’s fabric, check if the upholstery threads are fraying or discoloured.

Then consider the deal. Discoloured leather can easily be stained. Likewise, frayed fabric can be reupholstered for a fraction of the cost of a new set. Thrifty hacks like these can get your furniture looking brand new in no time.

Discard these items only if there are critters making a home in the frame, or you just want an excuse you try a new style for your home.

2. Are there holes in your furniture?

Stitching or patching holes are an option if the chair is structurally sound. Otherwise, start thinking about new furniture.

3. When you rise from the seat, does the cushion remain sunken?

If your butt print is still visible, broken or stretched springs may need to be changed. You can do this cheaply by yourself or with the help of an upholstery professional.

However, if the springs aren’t the problem, consider changing only the cushion at an upholstery or fabric store. If the seating set has a non-damaged cushion, take it to the store with you as a comparison. The salesperson should be able to better advise on the appropriate firmness and density of the new foam.

For hardcore DIY-ers, check out craft stores for fibre fillings and foam. You can find such stores at Chinatown, Geylang and even Spotlight!

4. Is the furniture frame structurally sound?

Flip your seating set upside down to inspect for possible cracks or breaks. Structural compromises are common if the furniture has been dropped.

5. Does your furniture sit level?

Is one end higher than another? If yes, check the frame. A peg on the leg might be missing.

However, if there are no visible signs of possible misgiving, it’s best to get your credit card details ready for that new sofa set.

6. When seated, do the arms separate from the rest of the frame?

If yes, this structural problem can easily be resolved with some wood glue and a few clamps. Not a handyman? Get rid of it for safety’s sake.

7. When you sit, do you feel wood or a frame sticking out?

Quite literally, if there is a pain in the butt, get new furniture!

8. Will a slip cover be enough to give the chair a new lease of life?

Perhaps the furniture is fine. No cracks, no pains in the back or butt. Consider doing some cosmetic changes.

With proper measurements of your seating set, you can purchase a cover slip online. Or choose fabric and approach an upholstery professional for a good fit if you’re sofa has an unusual shape.

When selecting fabric, keep in mind that the better fabric usually costs more. You don’t want to cut costs here because quality fabrics won’t shapeshift in the washing machine or fade. They’re probably softer too.

9. Can you afford buying the new furniture?

(Look at bank balance)

10. Do you just want to?

There’s nothing wrong with wanting new furniture.

However, this time around, look for timeless and quality pieces. Shopping sustainably is extremely important.
