In Singapore, how do you enjoy privacy, the view and natural lighting with your choice of window treatments? Read to find out.
If you live in a Singapore HDB, chances are your windows face,
- Another block (hey neighbour!), or
- A road, or
- A busy area such as a playground, carpark, market, or
- The common corridor, or
- A combination of all of the above.
Types of Window Treatments
With privacy at stake, choosing the best window treatments for your HDB is important. Your options range from drapery, window tints, lined panels, operative shutters, and light-controlling blinds. However, no one solution will yield the same effect on your room.
Window treatments differ in the amount of light they can block out. The more privacy you demand, the more natural light you block out. Each treatment also differs in how much light it can control. Pretty duh, but we had to say it.
Depending on the combination of light and privacy you could have, here are somethings Singaporeans should be aware of when choosing window treatments.
Blinds
Ability to Control Light: Maximum
Privacy: Only when fully closed
Noise Control: Basically none
Blinds are a great option especially if you have an east facing window. The afternoon sun’s glare and heat can be effectively blocked out.
Additionally, these window treatments come in standard white plastic or metal blades. The latter exudes a sleek, chic style. Both are waterproof and easily cleanable with dust cloth or a brush designed for blind blades.
Draperies
Ability to Control Light: Varies with thickness of material.
Privacy: Varies with material
Noise Control: Varies with thickness of material
If your room is small, opt for a lighter fabric; both in terms of weight and colour. You might want to consider using a combination of draperies, shades and blinds.
Heavy draperies are best suited for Victorian themed or large homes.
Shutters
Ability to Control Light: Maximum
Privacy: Only when fully closed
Noise Control: Fair

Plantation shutters are a great way to block out peeping Toms. When closed tightly and turned downwards, outsiders aren’t allowed a view in. When the blades turn up, you’ll allow sunlight and have conversations with passing neighbours.
White Roller Shade
Ability to Control Light: Yes
Privacy: Only when fully closed
Noise Control: None
This classic shade disappears behind a valance when rolled up, giving you full control on when and how much light to let in.
There you have it! Choosing window treatments for a HDB needs careful planning. Every room’s needs are going to be different. Think carefully about what you’ll use the space for and its surrounding environment.
